STUDIES ON MALE INFERTILITY


Abstract
This study was undertaken to evalute the clinical usefulness of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (Peamex, Tomoda Pharm, MFG. Co. LTD.), triiodothyronine (Liothyronine, Thyronamine, Takeda Pharm. MFG. Co. LTD.), and their combination on spermatogenesis of 15 azoospermic and 18 oligospermic individuals between the ages of 26 to 47. In an effort to enhance the possibility of resultant pregnancy in 14 vasovasostomy and 5 epididymovasostomy cases between the ages of 19 to 51, thyronamine was administered as an adjunct treatment.
Group 1: Peamex was administered to 4 oilgospermic and 1 azoospermic patients in doses of 1,000 I.U., twice a week, intramuscularly for 3 months. (Table 1).
Group 2: Thyronamine was given to 11 oligospermic and 10 azoospermic patients in doses of 15 to 25 mc. gm. daily orally for the varying period from 2 to 6 months.(Table 2).
Group 3: Peamex combined with thyronamine in the same doses was administered to 4 oligospermic and 4 azoospermic patients for 1/2 to 6 months. (Table 3)
Group 4: In 14 individuals who had subjected themselves to vasovasostomy operation, thyronamine was given as an adjunct treatment in doses of 15 to 25 mc. gm. for 2 to 3 months.(Table 4).
Group 5: In 5 patients who had undergone epididymovasostomy operation, thyronamine was given as an adjunct therapy in doses of 15 to 25 mc. gm. for 3 months. (Table 5).
In the group 1 treated with peamex (Table 1), there was 1 oligospermic patient in whom the sperm motility and concentration were increased over pre-treatment levels of more than 20 per cent, in 1 oligosperima, there was slight improvements, and in the remaining 2, there was no significant changes but no response was observed in 1 azoospermic patient.
In the group 2 treated with thyronamine(Table 2), 4 oligospermic patients showed significant increses in their sperm motility and concentration by more than 20 % of per-treatment values, 2 oligospermia showed slight improvements but remaining 5 oligospermic patients and 10 azoospermic patients showed no improvements.
In the group 3 treated with peamex combined with thyronamine(Table 3), the number of motile sperm and sperm counts rose by more than 20 per cent of per-treatment values in 2 oligospermic patients, slight rise in 1 oligospermic patient and no significant changes in the remaining 1 oligospermic patient but no response was showed in 4 azoospermic patients with this compound.
In the groups 4 and 5 (Tables 4 and 5), the adjunct treatment with thyronamine was utilized in 14 vasovasostomy and 5 epididymovasostomy operations, and the results would indicate that it may be of value, both in regard to the increment of sperm concentrations and the percentage of actively motile
